We Grew Apart
2019-2024
For this series I started wondering what it would look like if photographs could continue to grow and change. Would they grow over themselves and conceal the bodies in them? Would they start to look like abandoned buildings covered by vines? To create the objects in this series I start with discarded albums and photographs and slowly build over the bodies using adhesive fabric printed to look like the photograph. I digitally cut each fabric photo-growth into the silhouette of tree leaves, flowers and fungi. As the bodies disappear the new growths take on the shape of the bodies beneath them. As I started imagining these photo-growths I researched many different types of biological growths and found myself drawn to fungi because of their role in the decomposition of organic material. The photo-growths I started to create both look and act like fungi–they are simultaneously generative and destructive.
